1930s
Hairlines Barbershop opens its doors on Route 31 in Flemington, NJ — one of the earliest barbershops in Hunterdon County. The shop would go on to serve the Flemington community for nearly a century under different ownership before finding its permanent home with Paul Montera.
Early 1980s
Paul Montera earns his New Jersey State Master Barber license and begins his career. His father was a barber in New York — commuting to and from the city to run his own shop — and passed along the fundamentals of the craft. Paul took those foundations and built his own technique, finding his footing right here in Flemington rather than following his father's path to New York.
1980s–2000
Paul joins Hairlines Barbershop as a barber under owner Fred Cronce. Over the next two decades, Paul builds his clientele steadily — earning a reputation in Flemington for precision cuts, honest pricing, and the kind of consistency that keeps clients coming back year after year. By the time his tenure under Cronce ends, Hairlines is inseparable from Paul's name.
2001
After growing his clientele and becoming the face of Hairlines Barbershop, Paul Montera purchases the shop from Fred Cronce and becomes owner. It wasn't an inheritance — it was earned. Two decades of work, client by client, had made Paul the natural next owner of one of Flemington's oldest businesses.
Today
More than 40 years into his career and 20+ years as owner, Paul is still in the chair — and deliberately laying the groundwork for the next generation of Montera barbers in Flemington. Clients who first sat in his chair as teenagers now bring their own sons. The legacy isn't just the shop. It's what comes next.
The difference between a $30 haircut that looks great for 3 weeks and one that looks bad in 3 days comes down to technique. Here's what Paul does differently.
The hallmark of a trained barber. Paul uses scissor-over-comb for tapers and blends that clipper-only cuts simply can't match. It's slower, more precise, and produces a natural finish that grows out gracefully.
A proper straight razor shave requires hot lather, a sharp blade, multiple passes, and 40 years of technique. Paul mastered this through decades of practice — the kind of repetition that only comes from doing it thousands of times in the same shop.
Before fades became trendy, Paul was cutting them. His fade technique uses multiple guard lengths and hand-blending to create seamless gradients from skin to length — no harsh lines.
Every client gets a proper consultation before scissors touch hair. Paul asks about lifestyle, how often you can come in, how you style it at home. The cut is designed for your life, not just the chair.
"I didn't inherit this shop — I earned it. And I'm building it now so the next generation has something real to take over."
