If you've never had a traditional straight razor shave, there's a reason barbers have been offering it for over a century: done correctly, it's the closest, most comfortable shave possible. And in Flemington, NJ — and across all of Hunterdon County — there's one place that does it properly. With spring in full swing across Hunterdon County, it's a great time to refresh your look and book a classic barbershop shave.

What Makes a Straight Razor Shave Different

Cartridge razors and electric shavers cut hair at or slightly above the skin surface. A properly executed straight razor shave cuts at the skin level — cleanly, without the multiple pressure points of a cartridge blade. The result is smoother and longer-lasting.

Technique is everything. A poor straight razor shave causes razor burn, irritation, and ingrown hairs. A proper one — the kind Paul Montera has been delivering for 40+ years — leaves skin feeling better than it has in years.

Paul's Straight Razor Process

Here's exactly what happens during a straight razor shave at Hairlines:

1. Hot Towel
A hot towel is applied to the face for 2–3 minutes to open pores and soften facial hair. This step alone makes a significant difference — it's what separates a barbershop shave from a bathroom shave.

2. Pre-Shave Oil
A light pre-shave oil is applied to create a protective layer and further soften the beard.

3. Hot Lather
Not canned foam — hot lather. Applied with a brush and worked into the beard to lift and coat each hair.

4. First Pass: With the Grain
The first pass removes the bulk of the hair, always moving with the direction of growth to minimize irritation.

5. Second Pass: Across the Grain
For a closer finish, a second pass is made across the grain — only after re-lathering.

6. Cold Towel
A cold towel closes the pores, reduces redness, and leaves skin tight and refreshed.

Total time: 12–15 minutes. Total cost at Hairlines: included in the Men's Haircut & Shave at $65.

With local events and farmers' markets ramping up in late spring around Flemington, a freshly done shave is an easy way to look sharp for whatever's next.
